Arnhem Big game Saturday evening Day 3

Post by Don McHugh »

The overnight good news was that the Welsh Guards had made it to Veghel before night fall and so the Bridge had been replaced.

Image

The Grenadier Guards had now taken over and were moving on to Nijmegen.

Image

They where soon over the Grave bridge and closing on Nijmegen.

Image

Some very heavy fighting lay ahead.

In Arnhem the overnight redeployment had seen the Airborne Division abandon Oosterbeek to use all its strength to capture the bridge.

Image

The northern force had taken control of the railway bridge over the marshalling yards and brought their A/T guns forward to cover this open area.

Image

A fresh battalion of air landing troops had formed up for an attack through the marshalling yards.

Image

The Divisional HQ had moved into the West of Arnhem to coordinate the big push for the bridge.

Image

Another fresh battalion of Air landing troops had formed on the river road to try again.

Image

The two central lines of houses had been cleared the night before, so these gave a good covered starting point. It was hoped with 4 different points of attack the Germans would not be able to halt them all.

Image

All the artillery batteries had been brought over the railway line and a stop line had been formed on the railway line.

Image

The two central attacks go in with the help of some flame throwers and start to clear the next row of buildings.

The attack through the marshalling yards is held up with the arrival of armour and then an A/A detachment. It was a very good job I moved my A/T guns to cover this attack. The A/A detachment was completely destroyed , but we only manage to knock out one of the two tanks. Sorry for some reason I didn't take any pictures of this.

Image

The northern force managed to clear the next line of houses, but the River road force was finding the going very tuff.

Image

To the west the Germans where starting to arrive in large numbers.

Image

Both roads were full of German infantry marching to the sound of battle.

Image

There seemed to be a never ending line of German infantry.

Image

Very late in the day, the German flamethrower tanks attacked the small force we had left to the west of the railway line. Despite a number of PIAT rounds one of the tanks managed to set fire to the building.

Image

Back in Arnhem the northern force had taken the next line of buildings, but the river road force had been repulsed.

A very heavy day of fighting with a large number of casualties on both sides.

Hopefully the last day would see an attack on the bridge from the south.

Don

Superb Don! It looks a desperate affair, must have been great to game it.... thmbs2)
Greatness is not in where we stand,
but in what direction we are moving,
we must sail sometimes in the wind,
and sometimes against it,
but sail we must, and not drift nor lie at anchor.

It was indeed a great game, but my legs certainly knew i had been standing on them all day.

I slept a large part of Monday to recover.

Well worth it though.

Will try and get the final day done tomorrow.

Gripping stuff. Great looking game and lovely little details on the individual units adds so much.

That was great. What caught my eye was what you did with the double railway tracks.

Well I did think that too, but we’ll apply gamer’s artistic license.... thmbs2)

Not sure Colin would have been very happy if we had physically knocked down the wooden fences ;) ;) :(
