Arnhem Big game Saturday pm day2

Post by Don McHugh » Mon May 07, 2018 3:58 pm

After a short break during which all the tables had a chance to consolidate their positions and bring their troops forward, we moved into day two.

The Welsh Guards arrived south of Eindhoven needing to get to the Veghel bridge before night fall.

Image

The second lift arrives, but there is no march moving today so not sure they will come into action today.

Image

The second lift on the lower road. The last battery of 75mm guns arrived and was pressed into action straight away.

Image

Overnight the Germans had retreated out of Oosterbeek in the the edges of Arnhem. All the first day lift had been allowed to close up to the railway line.

Image

Similar had happened on the lower road, but in their case it was only the last arrivals that had moved to the railway bridge.

Image

The main southern force had moved up level with the hospital.

Image

Frost's battalion along with elements of the Recce Squadron had made it to this block of buildings, one block short of the bridge.

Image

This was all that was left of the Recce squadron

Image

Most of these elements held on to very late on day two, when the weight of German numbers took it toll.

Image

Frost's leading battalion had made it to the block of buildings just short of the bridge.

Image

Although the bridge was still clear, German troops were moving in from the east in ever increasing numbers.

Image

All the buildings in the centre of Arnhem are occupied by Germans.

Image

The battered remains of the German force that had so effectively held up the northern route, had fallen back to the building around the railway marshalling yards.

Image

The northern force were tasked with attacking uphill and clearing this side of Arnhem.

Image

The troops that arrived late on day one have moved up the column to add their weight to the attack.

Image

Great news from lower down the corridor, the Welsh Guards had bypassed Eindhoven with the majority of their force.

Image

Some of the Welsh Guards force is helping the 101st Paras clear the last of the Germans from Eindhoven.

Image

The Germans are hold up in these last three building.

Image

On the lower road Frost makes a dash for the building to the west of the bridge, but comes under heavy fire from the 20mm A/A on the bridge.

Image

The paras make it up the hill and begin to clear the row of terraced houses.

Image

The full battalion makes it with few causalities.

Image

The houses are soon cleared, helping to take some of the pressure of the river road.

Image

Day two lift is doing its best to get into action.

Image

The northern attack continues and clears all the area to the west of the hospital.

Image

Bad news from lower down the corridor. The Germans have blow the Veghel bridge, so it is even more important the Welsh Guards make it before night fall in the hope a bailey bridge can be built over the canal tonight.

Image

The Welsh Guards are not far away, just south at Koevering.

Image

The Guards column strung out alone the road, could be touch and go.

Image

With the Veghel bridge down, things can't get much worse, or can they?
German armour starts to arrive in Arnhem.

At end of day two, things could have gone better for the Allies.

More soon.

Greatness is not in where we stand, but in what direction we are moving. We must sail sometimes in the wind, and sometimes against it, but sail we must, and not drift nor lie at anchor.

Very impressive game. There's a great narrative flow to the game that captures the fighting around Arnhem very well.
