Arnhem Big Game Friday PM

Post by Don McHugh » Wed May 02, 2018 8:33 pm

Unfortunately the hall was not big enough to fit in the table for XXX Corps Breakout, so it was back to Colin's to pay the game in his wargames room.

I was delayed by an excellent cup of tea, so missed the first couple of moves.

Image

Irish Guards waiting for room on the road north.

Image

Dozer wasn't on the side lines for long.

Image

Irish Guards seemed not to have made much progress, but the Germans had caught them out by deploying along way forward.

Image

Progress was very slow.

Image

This was just one of a number of German A/T guns taking advantage of the Guards very exposed position. There even appear to have been a couple of ex-Russian guns in there.

Image

Burning tanks begin to block the road. Other tanks are loathed to pass in case they get damaged by the burning tank.

Image

More German guns appear from ambush and add to the pressure on the Guards.

Image

Dozer tank arrives to clear the road.

Image

Typhoon arrives to help clear some of the nasties.

Image

Things soon improve and the Guards advance to the wood.

Image

A few lucky shots during the pre-game bombardment had cleared the Germans from the wood, so the speed of the advance picks up.

Image

Doesn't seem too much in left to delay the Guards.

Image

Guards make a final dash for Valkenswaard and find the village clear.

Image

The road is very soon full of traffic moving North, next stop Eindhoven.

Quite wonderful! The tension moving up that single highway is palpable. Whilst, glad you had time for tea, makes sure XXX corps keeps that to a minimum. ;)

Greatness is not in where we stand, but in what direction we are moving. We must sail sometimes in the wind, and sometimes against it, but sail we must, and not drift nor lie at anchor.

An inspring report. The terrain is superb and the tanks of the Irish Guards look great. I hadn't realized just how big the AEC armoured car was. Great stuff. :-)

I'm tempted to try this scenario as the race against time brings an extra element. Thank you for sharing and inspiring. :-)

Ditto to the above comments. I particularly like both road/wood pieces, myself. Lot of god PSC stuff, who makes the AEC?

I doubt that there was any PSC kit on that table, most of the vehicles are older than that company.

The only PSC kit are the Sherman 75mms, Fireflies and Stuarts.

The AEC is an old Skytrex metal model from back in the day
